In order to motivate a worker, we must in the first place determine which are their needs, motivations, tastes, preferences, objectives or I put personal. And, according to it, to determine the form of motivation more indicated to use.
We must consider that each person has needs, motivations, tastes and I put different, to some them can motivate something, whereas to others the opposite can motivate them.

But besides having to consider the personal characteristics of the worker, we must also consider the moment or the situation that is appearing.
Perhaps for example, a person has a necessity at a certain moment, but after to have satisfacido this necessity, has new needs now.
Perhaps for example, a worker has initially like necessity the economic security, then, to motivate it, we must focus in the economic incentives, but once he has satisfied this necessity, he could now have overcoming needs or autorrealización, then to motivate it, no longer we could continue doing it with economic incentives, but, for example, we could grant majors to him responsibilities or autonomy.
Or, for example, to an employee whom it likes to assume challenges, to motivate it we can grant majors to them responsibilities, new functions, tasks or I put, but arrived a little while, this one employee gets to have too many responsibilities, granting to him new functions, tasks or I put, can finish crushing it, generating tension and displeasure to him, instead of motivation.
In summary, to motivate a worker, we must first of all, know it either and consider the moment or the situation that is occurring and, on the basis of it, to determine the technique or form of motivation the more indicated to use it in him.
