The mission of a company

The mission of a company is a lasting declaration of the object, intention or reason of being of a company.


Unlike the vision, the declaration of the mission answers the question “which is our reason of being? ”, whereas the vision answers the question: “what we want to be”.


The reason of establishing the mission of a company is that this one serves like datum point that allows that all the members of the company act based on this one, that is to say, to obtain that objectives settle down, design strategies, take decisions and they execute tasks, under the light of this one; thus obtaining, coherence and organization.


The mission gives to identity and personality him to a company, showing external agents such as clients or suppliers, the scope in which it is developed, and allowing to distinguish it of other similar companies.


On the other hand, establishing the mission of a company, allows that this one serves like motivating force, obtaining that all the members of the company feel identified and it jeopardize with her; reason why it is necessary that one communicates and always is made remember between all the workers.


A good mission of company, must have the following characteristics:

  • it must be clear and comprehensible for all the members of the company.
  • it does not have very to be limited that gets to limit driving of the members of the company, but must either be very ample that gets to bring about confusions exceeds what the company does.
  • it must distinguish to the company of other similars.

In order to formulate the mission of a company, we can take into account the following elements:

  • clients: who are our clients?
  • products: which are our main products or services?
  • market: which are our market?
  • technology: which is our technology?
  • interest by the growth: we were interested to reach economic objectives?
  • philosophy: which are our beliefs, values or principles?
  • capacities: which is our differentiation or our competitive advantage?
  • interest by the public image: we worried about social, communitarian or environmental subjects?
  • interest by the employees: we were interested in our workers?

In order to culminate, we see the mission of some well-known companies:


Disney: “We created happiness when offering the finest entertainment for people of all the ages, in any place”.


Sony: “To undergo the joy of the progress and to apply the technology to the benefit of the people”.


Google: “To organize the world-wide information so that it is universally accessible and useful”.


Microsoft: “To work to help to the people and the companies worldwide to develop all their potential”.


eBay: “To provide world-wide an electronic market in which practically any person can deal with almost any product, being thus created economic opportunities by everybody”.


Apple: “To produce discharge quality, low costs, products easy of using that they incorporate high tech for the individual. We are demonstrating that the high tech does not have to be intimidante for the nonexpert ones in computation”.


Nike: “To bring inspiration and innovation for each athlete in the world. If you have a body, you are an athlete”.


Wal-Mart: “We saved money to Him so that it lives better”.
